It's funny no matter how far along people are on their creative journey, we all have the same feelings of shame and guilt and doubt. This really made me feel better - off to listen to that podcast!

It’s such a great podcast! I think we all experience those feelings when creating, wanting to be original and to create something new that is truly our own, but of course we are building on the shoulders of the giants who came before us. So glad you found the post useful Deborah!

Mariska, thank you for this post and for pointing out the fascinating Kirby Ferguson talk. I’m finding both enormously helpful in reconsidering how to approach my art-making when I’m feeling a bit stuck and overwhelmed and when I feel as though I’ve lost even before I’ve begun. It was also very helpful to see examples of your own process as an illustration of this strategy. You’ve given me a lot to think about at a time when I really needed to hear some sensible advice - many thanks!

Thank you Lesleigh, I’m so glad you found it useful. I got so excited about it that I had to share it here, I absolutely adore the Creative Peptalk podcast. There are so many great episodes, absolutely recommend having a listen. This episode on the principles of creativity really clicked with me, it made me look at my own thoughts on copying and feeling shameful about it or unoriginal, but if you put it in the context of learning off course it makes sense. Also recommend the short documentary by Kirby Ferguson, his examples are great!
